Activity: THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. CHAPTERS 7, 8 AND 9 (GIL’S FURNITURE BOUGHT & SOLD / MEME ORTIZ / LOUIE, HIS COUSIN & HIS OTHER COUSIN)

1. Describe your own household, using 10 adjectives that can also be used to describe people.

My house is very cozy, it always stays totally clean and it is very picturesque. In addition, my home is warm and I feel comfortable with my family members. On the other hand, its walls are white and there is a big fireplace. Also, my family and I try to make our home as organized as possible. I love my room; it is very nice for my taste. Equally important, our neighbors are very friendly and most of all I love seeing the clear and sunny landscape.

2. What is a junk store?

A junk shop is a retail store similar to a second-hand store that sells used products mostly at cheap prices. Similarly, it is characterized as a low-quality antique store. Or is consider as a recycling shop.

3. Does this place seem neat and tidy? Support your answer.

No, the place is not organized, Esperanza mentions that everything is distributed randomly and that some objects are found backwards. As this quote shows "Tables with the feet upside-down and rows and rows of refrigerators ...". Likewise, the place is consequently not clean since there is a lot of dust and dirt in the place, also, in the store there is no lighting and the corridors are very, very narrow, there are even objects that no longer have a use. In this quote you can see what I mean "The store is small with just a dirty window for light. He doesn’t turn the lights on unless you got money to buy things... and couches that spin dust in the air when you punch them."

4. How does the writer imply that the owner of the junk store is dark skinned? Support your answer.

the writer insinuates that the owner of the junk shop is dark-skinned, because in the dark you could only see the man's glasses. In addition, the owner is a bit shy and does not usually talk too much.

5. Name the MAIN EVENT in each of the chapters that you read today. Gil’s Furniture Bought & Sold: This chapter, Esperanza, describes aspects of the junk shop and Nenny's enthusiasm for pampering her attention to an object that attracted her (a music box). Meme Ortiz: Esperanza in this chapter talks about Meme, whose real name is Juan, and her dog, who has names in both English and Spanish, move into Cathy's house after her family leaves the neighborhood. Esperanza describes the house, a wooden house that Cathy's father built, which also has a tree in the backyard that is taller than Esperanza's house. Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin: Meme Ortiz's family rents their basement apartment to a Puerto Rican family. The family's son, Louie, is friends with Esperanza's brother. Louie's cousin, Marin, also lives with the family in the basement. Marin is older than Esperanza and wears nylons and Avon makeup, which she also sells in her spare time, and sings sassy songs while taking care of Louie's little sisters. One day, another cousin of Louie's arrives in a beautiful yellow Cadillac and takes the neighborhood kids for a ride. They go around the block over and over again, until they hear sirens. Louie's cousin orders everyone to get out and drives off. However, he does not go around the end of the alley and crashes into a lamppost. The police arrest him.

Loui: older brother of six sisters Marin: she wears dark stockings all the time and lots of makeup Boy cousin: he owns a huge yellow Cadillac with white-faced tires and a scarf. In the same way, I'm surprised that he was caught by the police, what did he do?
