Summary about Yes/No Questions – Negative – Information Questions Report Speech Author: Johan Gracia Negative Imperative In the negative sentences, NOT is put before the infinitive: Not to speak, not to walk or you can use suitable introductory verb such as: Forbade, but the reported speech form in positive. Add “not” depending on the sentences is used with auxiliary or verb. Structure: Subject + reporting verb + indirect object + not to + infinitive. For examples: 1. Direct: Doctor said to me, “Do not smoke” Reported: Doctor said to me not to smoke. 2. Direct: She said, “Don’t tell a lie, Aslam” Reported: She forbade Aslam to tell a lie. Reported: She advised Aslam not to tell a lie.

Reported Question – Yes/No Asked if / Wanted to know if For examples: 1. Direct: Are you coming to the party? Reported: He asked if I was coming to the party. 2. Direct: Has John arrived yet? Reported: She wanted to know if John had arrived yet. In reported question we don’t use auxiliary verbs: do/does/did For examples: 1. Direct: Do you like tomatoes? Reported: She asked if I like/liked tomatoes. 2. Direct: Did you have a nice trip? Reported: They wanted to know if I had a nice trip. Reported Question – Other Asked / Wanted to know No auxiliary verbs: do / does / did For examples: 1. Direct: What time do you start work? Reported: He asked what time I start work. 2. Direct: Where did Sarah buy her car?
