Puritan Bennett™ 840 Ventilator Respiratory Mechanics Software Option

Assess lung status and performance instantly The Respiratory Mechanics (RM) Software Option for the Puritan Bennett™ 840 Ventilator makes it easy to assess and rapidly make any necessary changes in a patient’s respiratory therapy. The software provides coached respiratory maneuvers such as negative inspiratory force (NIF) and vital capacity (VC). RM data, including occlusion pressure, can help determine if a patient is ready to be weaned. A user-friendly graphical interface clearly displays maneuver name, user prompts and controls, and recent calculated results. Figure 1 The Respiratory Mechanics software option saves the last three values for negative inspiratory force, occlusion pressure (P0.1) and vital capacity in tabular form for historical data collection.

• The Respiratory Mechanics software option provides noninvasive, continuous and breath-by-breath monitoring. • During a NIF maneuver, circuit pressure is shown on the waveforms screen and the current maneuver produces a real-time display. • Maneuver time is determined by the operator to help ensure a good effort.

Specifications

Peak Spontaneous Flow (PSF)

The RM software automatically calculates and displays the following performance indicators:

The maximum inspiratory flow rate sampled during a spontaneous inspiration. It can help quantify changes in spontaneous inspiratory flow demand and can be helpful in estimating the peak flow setting or choosing an optimum level of pressure support. Peak Expiraratorory Flow (PEF)

Monitored Data Maneuver, Function, Range, Resolution and Accuracy Negative Inspiratory Force (NIF) — Measures maximum inspiratory force against an occluded airway. Range

-50 to 0 cm H2O

Resolution 0.1 cm H2O NIF > -10 cm H2O 1 cm H2O for NIF < -10 cm H2O Accuracy

± (2 + 4% of reading) cm H2O for flows < 60 L/min

Occlusion Pressure (P0.1) — Measures pressure generated during the first 100 ms of inspiration against an occluded airway. Range

-20 to 0 cm H2O

Resolution 0 .1 cm H2O for P0.1 > -10 cm H2O 1 cm H2O for P0.1 < -10 cm H2O Accuracy

± (2 + 4% of reading) cm H2O

The maximum flow rate observed during exhalation, excluding the first 100 msec and can be used as an indicator of obstructed airways. End Expiratory Flow (EEF)

The flow rate measured at the end of exhalation and can be used to determine whether expiratory time is adequate to prevent gas trapping and intrinsic PEEP. RESTRICTIONS FOR USE

Respiratory Mechanics maneuvers can be performed in all breathing modes except Bi-Level, and are not available during the following conditions: • Apnea ventilation

Vital Capacity (VC) — Measures maximum lung volume.

• Safety pressure control ventilation (PCV)

Range

0 to 6,000 mL

• Occlusion Status Cycling (OSC)

Resolution 0.1 mL for 0 to 9.9 mL 1 mL for 10 to 6,000 mL

• Noninvasive ventilation (NIV)

Accuracy

• When the circuit type is neonatal

0.01 second
