The Doll Project N°XIV VAMPIRE BAT „VLAD“ THAT‘S WHAT YOU NEED: • 2,0 mm (US 0) and 2,25 or 2,5 mm (US 1 ½) crochet hook • tapestry needle • 2 different yarns calling for 2-3 mm hook • further 3 yarns calling for 1.75-2 mm hook • 2 black 6 mm (0,2 inch) glass eyes (or safety eyes or

some black yarn to embroider)

• 2 small black snaps (press studs) • soft stuffing (like cotton wool, polyfill, etc.) FIRST OF ALL: Make sure you crochet pretty tight all the way to prevent getting large stretching holes between the stitches so the stuffing doesn‘t get out once you‘ve firmly filled the doll with stuffing. If you crochet rather loosely, use a smaller hook size (2,0 mm / US 0). Of course you can choose other yarns - the choice of yarn is completely up to you and your personal taste. The doll‘s measurements may change so make sure to adjust the size of the eyes accordingly. Using the following yarns on a 2,25 mm hook the doll will measure 29 cm (11,4 inch) total. MC yarn (black) ≈ 60g Wolle Rödel Sport- & Strumpfwolle Tweed, 4 ply, color N°16590 or Regia Tweed, 4 ply, color N°98 or Lana Grossa Meilenweit Tweed, 4 ply, color N°126 CC1 yarn (white or light creme) ≈ 25g SMC Catania Fine, 4 ply, color N°1005 CC2 yarn (gray) ≈ 15g Regia 2-fädig Stopf- und Beilaufgarn, 2 ply, color N°44 or ≈ 25g Wolle Rödel Hakelgarn, for hook size 1,75-2 mm, color N°1525 CC3 yarn (purple) ≈ 20g Wolle Rödel Hakelgarn, for hook size 1,75-2 mm, color N°1516 CC4 yarn (black) ≈ 3g Regia 2-fädig Stopf- und Beilaufgarn, 2 ply, color N°2066 or ≈ 5g Wolle Rödel Hakelgarn, for hook size 1,75-2 mm, color N°1590

SEW THE EARS ONTO THE HEAD 01 First of all you should sew a few stitches through the hood and the head to secure the hood. Sew one stitch through the tip of the „hairline“ on the forehead as well.

02 Place both ears onto the back of the head and use some pins to keep them in place. The ear‘s bottom tips should point to the middle of the neck. To sew the ears onto the head you can use whipstitches.

03 Sew along the edge of the first ear all the way up from A to B - see photo 03. When it‘s done, sew on the second ear from A to B as well. Bend the outer edges of the ears towards the brim of the hood. Sew them in place along the brim and along the neck towards the middle (pink line in photos 03+06).

BAT CAPE You need a purple (CC3 yarn) and a gray (CC2 yarn) piece. Both pieces will be joined to one cape at the end. To make sure the cape is flexible enough to be smoothly draped around the body you have to choose a yarn that‘s half the weight of the yarn you‘ve used for the rest of the doll. Since the yarn is much thinner you have to choose a smaller hook as well - take a hook size 2 mm (US 0).

COLLAR Rejoin the CC2 yarn (gray) into the 1st stitch of the foundation chain (photo 01). Work the following first row of the cape‘s collar into the remaining loops along the foundation chain: # row 01.

STRAIGHTEN THE SIDES Before you can start to assemble the gray and the purple piece to a cape, you have to straighten the sides. To do so you work one row of single crochet stitches along the sides of collar and cape. Crochet 2 sc in every dc‘s post along the sides (photo 08). Make sure to crochet the same number of stitches (40 sts) on every side on both pieces!

sc 2 on every row

ASSEMBLING THE PIECES Once you‘ve finished the gray and the purple piece they have to be joined to a cape by crocheting a final round around the entire piece. On top of the 5 tips you have to work a so called „picot“.

08

HERE‘S HOW YOU DO THE „PICOT“: ch 3 (photo 10), insert hook into frontloop of last st and the upper loop of the last stitch‘s post (photo 11) and crochet a slst (photo 12).

ASSEMBLING ROUND Join the CC4 yarn (black) into the 1st stitch of the last row on the bottom of the cape. Insert hook through the corresponding stitches of both pieces at a time and start crocheting the following round: # row 01.

ch 3 (photo 02), dc in same stitch as join, dc 15, [into the chsp: *dc, tr, picot, tr, dc*, dc 14 (photo 05), dc-dec, dc-dec (photo 06),

dc 14] 4x, into last chsp: *dc, tr, picot, tr, dc*, dc 16, ch 2

Continue along the side of the cape: sc 2 into the post of the last dc, sc in every stitch until you reach the upper right corner of

the collar. *sc, ch 2, sc* into the stitch at the corner, sc in every stitch along the upper edge of the collar until you reach the left

corner of the collar. *sc, ch 2, sc* into the corner stitch.

sc in every stitch along the left side of the cape until you reach the ch 3 from the beginning of the round. sc 2 into the chsp

underneath the 3 ch, slst into 3rd ch. Break the yarn and weave in the ends.

At last you have to block the cape (photo 07): stretch it out, fix it with pins, moisten it with water and let it dry.

TO FIX THE CAPE ONTO THE BODY sew it onto the scrag right underneath the cape‘s collar. You just have to sew on 3 spots: the left, right and on the middle of VLADs neck (see green pins on photo 08). Join the cape and the arms using some snaps (press studs). Sew one part of the snap onto the corner of the cape (photo 07) and the other one onto the arm in line with the thumb (photo 09). If you plan to give VLAD to a child under the age of 3, I recommend sewing the corners of the cape onto the arms instead of using snaps.

BOW TIE take the CC3 yarn (purple) and start a chain of 11 ch. Insert the hook into the 2nd ch from hook and crochet 10 sc along the chain and turn the piece.Work the following rows through backloops only: # row 02.-13. ch, sctbl 10 - turn (photo 01) (10 sts) Hold the first and the last row together (see photo 02-03).Then sc together the remaining loop of the chain with the corresponding stitches of the last row to build a little tube (photo 02-05). Flatten the tube and wrap some yarn around the center (photo 07). Finally make a knot at the backside of the bow to fix the wrapped yarn, break the yarn and use the yarn rests to sew the bow in place.

AT LAST SOME MAKE-UP (NOT NECESSARY BUT CUTE DETAIL): Add some yarn-hair around the head if you prefer. Maybe you like a light blush on the cheeks – use a fabric marker in light pink color and add a blush carefully. You can also add some gray color right under the eyes to give your VLAD an extra spooky touch.
